Advisory system for ICU NUTRITION
BEACON provides open-loop advice for optimizing Nutrition in ICU ventilated adult patients.
BEACON uses measured inputs into a computer program that has been designed to assist clinical decisions for changes to the nutrition supply for the individual patient undergoing mechanical ventilation.
The objective of the BEACON Caresystem is to present advice for nutrition adjustment in a clear and easy-to-use graphical format.

Simple and Clear Advice Screen
BEACON continuously monitors the patient, and provides advice at any given time. The advice is given in a simple and clear format as shown below.
A) The measured REE, B) the applied guideline, C) the Target REE (based on guideline), D) the Nutrition Formula and E) the advice for Flow Rate on the Nutrition pump, either Enteral or Parenteral
The advice is applied by changing the Flow Rate of the nutrition pump (note: BEACON is open-loop)

Indirect Calorimetry
The baseline of BEACONs Nutrition advice is the Gas Exchange measurements VO2/VCO2 and the calculated REE
Details of the Advice Screen
BEACONs advice screen provides an overview of all variables involved with the advice provided by BEACON

The advice screen shows the following information
-
the Measured REE (calculated REE based on the VO2 and VCO2 measurements)
-
the applied Guideline (ESPEN 2019 shown. Guidelines can be added to BEACON)
-
the Target REE (based on the current REE and applied guideline)
-
the Nutrition Formula currently used for the patient (Fresubin shown. Nutrition bags can be added to BEACON)
-
the Advice for the Target Flow Rate of the Nutrition pump
Guidelines
BEACON contains default the ESPEN 2019 and ASPEN 2019 guidelines. Local, National or other guidelines can be added to BEACON and used as part of the Nutrition advice.

Nutrition Plan Overview
If the Nutrition pump is connected to BEACON, then BEACON can provide a status for the Nutritional plan, such as an overview of how much nutrition has been given, what is the deficit.
Note: Some of the features may not be available in your country
At any given time, the user can check how long the guideline has been applied
The user can also select a % (10-120%) for the Target REE. BEACON will then use this %, to estimate the Nutritional needs of the patient

The Graph display of BEACON, shows the VO2, VCO2, REE and RQ:
-
VO2 - is the measured Oxygen Consumption of the patient
-
VCO2 - is the produced Carbon Dioxide production of the patient
-
REE - is the calculated Resting Energy Expenditure of the patient, based on the VO2 and VCO2 measurements
-
RQ - is the calculated difference between VO2 and VCO2
For VO2 and VCO2, the average Variable in % is shown over a time window of 30 minutes
For REE, the current REE is shown and average REE is shown over a time window of 30 minutes

User can simply select the guideline which shall be applied for the patient.
Guidelines can be added to BEACON using a build-in tool.
User can simply select the Formula which is used for the patient
Formulas can be added to BEACON using a build-in tool.
BEACONs Nutritional Plan overview provides an overview of how much nutrition has been provided and what is the nutritional deficit

Nutrition Formulas
BEACON contains default several Nutrition Formulas. Others can be added to BEACON and used as part of the Nutrition advice.
